A weekend getaway in Newport, RI

A weekend getaway in Newport, RI

Just a short drive from Boston, the charming “City by the Sea” Newport, makes for a perfect romantic getaway. Known for its historic charm, extravagant mansions, gorgeous waterfront views and great restaurants, we were ecstatic to be hosted by Hotel Viking to enjoy this coastal heaven.

Hotel Viking

Located in the heart of downtown Newport, we checked in to the iconic Hotel Viking and settled in our grand and luxurious Breakers suite. After a few relaxing moments in our elegant Italian Renaissance inspired room, we were recharged and ready to explore this lovely town. We started with an afternoon snack and a cuppa delicious Cappuccino at the Hill Market cafe located in the hotel.

With our bellies happy, we kicked off our trip with a glimpse of grandeur at the beautiful mansions on Bellevue Avenue located a stone’s throw away from the hotel. We began with the grandest of them all The Breakers built by the Vanderbilt family as a summer home and then made our way to the romantic Rosecliff cottage adorned by beautiful gardens.

After spending a few hours in the luxurious Gilded age, we returned to the rooftop bar of our hotel at cocktail hour to enjoy some delicious cocktails and bites while watching the sun go down. Top of the Newport has a great atmosphere and marina views which we enjoyed warming up next to the fire pits.

Next morning, we got up bright and early for a relaxation massage at spa FJÖR. And oh boy! what a way to start the day. On our way back to the room, we grabbed some yummy Bagel sandwiches from Hill Market.

We headed out on our complimentary bike rentals offered by the hotel to explore Thames street and the shops and restaurants that lined along it. Our first stop was Liberty Doughnuts to stuff our bellies with hot, made to order specialty donuts. My favorite was Coffee Toffee and Akhil loved the blueberry glazed N.P.D.

We continued our excursions popping in and out of boutiques and stores on Bellevue Avenue and had built up an appetite for lunch. We landed at Pasta Beach on recommendation of our Hotel concierge Roy. The fresh pastas with homemade sauces left our taste buds relished and our hearts wanting for more although the hearty portions are good to fill ya up.

We took the scenic Ocean drive with our windows rolled down, feeling the ocean breeze and gazing at the gorgeous views of the Atlantic. Returning at our hotel for a Beach Butler experience (available all summer long) planned by our hosts, we were thrilled to experience a beautiful sunset at the Easton Beach feeling like royalty.  The experience offers a personal beach butler who’d drive you to and from the beach, pack all your necessities like towels, sunscreen, water etc. setup chairs and umbrella, packing a picnic basket with small bites, snacks and beverages. What did I say? Royalty!

After the beach, we enjoyed the cavernous clawfoot tub in our suite and on our way to dinner at One Bellevue we stopped by the hotel backyard where you can enjoy making s’mores by the fire pits. We called it a night after a truly satisfying dinner of local squash Ravioli, zesty summer salad and a delicious Creme Brûlée to finish with.

It was a super lazy morning reminiscing our wonderful stay here but it was time to leave this charming town. We checked out and stopped by Cru Cafe for brunch before continuing with other adventures.
